27. The Stray Dog Hachi's Long Wait For...

🌹
July 30, 2020, last night, I was not able to deeply sleep, for the lightning flashed, the thunder struck, and the rain poured down all night long... It was unusual happening to me, and it will be my first experience to witness such a loud-mouthed thunderbolt which was hitting for a long time... I was scared during the last night thereby...

Usually, I cannot sleep well, so often feel fatigue next morning. My dog( breed: Shih-tzu) named "Nuni" also couldn't sleep well due to that thunder and lightning, Nuni was just wandering from place to place, fearing that thunderbolt as much as I was frightening that time.

I have lived with my dog for nearly ten years, having said that,  Nuni is not my original dog, because I adopted him from the remote dog shelter that my city(government) has managed... I chose a Shih-tzu, about that time, Nuni looked healthy and cute than any other dogs in there.

But yet, my dog Nuni is not a friendly dog, but rather, is just dull... 😆 In addition,  Nuni doesn't like to do cute things/act cutely like many other dogs make sweet
gestures to their owners. Thus, I think that Nuni might have a trauma by which he was abandoned from his former owner, so that Nuni might not express his affection in this way...  If not so, this might be a Shih-tzu's intrinsic character.

That being said, Nuni is in communion with me. Whenever I fondle Nuni, then, that night Nuni sleeps in front of my room door, it seems that Nuni wants to protect me, while I sleep in.  But, at other times, Nuni rarely comes to me voluntarily...

When I adopted Nuni, he was already received the surgeryã…¡neuter/desexualization and debarking.
I heard that the surgery, desexualization, keeps dogs from getting diseases, for this reason, Nuni might have never been sick for ten years. I hope that Nuni will not be sick on and on...  However, the surgery of debarking looks cruel... For Nuni cannot bark itself as a dogã…¡people don't want dogs to loudly bark, hence they intentionally let dogs receive a debarking...

My dog has his own character that I have observed since;
ã…¡ Only likes to "sleep" all day long.
ã…¡ Only like to "eat".
Frankly, Nuni is a "glutton", and does eat balanced dog foods,  every time dog foods are regularly changed, regardless, Nuni always eats all the things very well, whatever it is, so seems to like diverse dog foods.

Moreover, Nuni also likes to eat the food that people eat: candies, fruits(esp. apple, banana), bread, ice cream, sweet potato, chestnut, etc.
ã…¡ Never barks, thus my house is not loud by barking.
ã…¡ Has a docile/mild character unlike small and lean dogs.
e.g. poodle, chihuahua, yorkshire terrier, etc. They tend to bark much and are very aggressive, keen, and imprudent, etc.  While, Nuni is never "picky" or "peevish", but is always docile, generous, dull...
ã…¡ Like to listen door bell.
 ã…¡ Like to go outside.
  ã…¡ Is very healthy.
Well, one day, I watched TV that televised regarding those who lived an unique life unlike ordinary people. There was a young man who lived alone. He was interested in caring unique animals including reptiles (approximately 30~40 animals)ã…¡ even so, I don't even know all that animal's names, and cannot remember...

By the way, there were also two otters in the bathtub, it looked like an otter in my eyes, they frequently scratched a bathroom door by their tooth! All these things were from a " jungle" (e.g. Amazon of the south America). Because, He purchased the imported animals from. His house was crammed with that kind of animals!  In addition, there were unruly and wiled animals among them, so his house was in a "mess" all the time. For this reason, He looked very busy to clean and tidy his filthy house, for such animals always wandered from place to place, or were on the rampage in his house! And he had to feed all that animals!

And I remember another similar TV program. There was an unmarried woman who liked to live with an adult pig " in her house", not a pigpen, thus, she unilaterally rented  a house/room to live with the pigã…¡probably, the rent expense of house would be very expensive... We, as an ordinary people, don't understand well their passion to care that animals in that manner...

Anyway, especially, dogs have been in communion with humans than any other animals, we people may have heard that dogs could be in rapport with humans.

For example, some brilliant dogs have been rescuing people, so to speak, when earthquakes occur, that dogs rescue a dying people who are buried by the collapsed buildings through their signalã…¡smelling and barking.  Or that kind of dogs work in the war as a police dog/German Shepherd, as a search and rescue dog, as a drug-sniffing dog, plus as a guide dog for the blind... and so on.

However, sometimes people read or hear the touching and pitiful news(stories) that such dogs died in the end by overworking...  I remember such touching storiesã…¡even so, I don't expressly remember if it was a real story or not. It might have been a fairy tale; I read it when I was a primary school student, perhaps...

One is, there was a loyal, brilliant, and an intelligent dog which saved his owner who fell asleep by getting drunk on the isolated field, that dog was there with his owner. By the way, a fire took place around the field, and the tongues of fire were violently flaming like flicking snake's tongues which was split into two. Such tongues of fire seemed to swallow everything around... Nonetheless, the drunk owner was still sleeping without knowing its blazing fire...

At last, the adult dog made a decision to rescue his master... Fortunately, there was a brook around the field, the dog put water on his body, and then innumerably rolled around the place that the master lied down so as to extinguish the flaming fire...

When the master awoke from the sleep and the drunk, there was his black-scorched/blackened dog around him, which was already dead by burning... Before one knows,  the fire was also extinguished like the death of his dog... And the master perceived that his black-scorched dog saved himself like so... while he was sleeping by drinking alcohol on the field...

The other story is a "real story" to which it took place in Japan. The dog's name was " Hachi " (1923~1935)

Hachi , The National Dog of Japan
Image: wikipedia / Google

One day,  a professor, named Ueno, of university was received two little dogs, one of them was "Hachi"... The professor was fond of that kind of dog(the national dog of Japan), but whenever he owned that dogs, sadly all of them was dead, so that he looked forward to have that kind of dog again... His dream came true, receiving Hachi, the professor wholeheartedly cared Hachi... At last, Hachi grew up, as we see above photo, under the warm care of the professor...

Hachi always liked to wait coming back the professor who came back home after his working in front of door, and always went to see off/escort the professor to the Sinagawa train station. When the professor completely took a train to work, then, Hachi came back home again...

And when the time was reached that the professor came back home again,  Hachi also went to the train station in advance, and then awaited him in there...

In the mean time, the professor was suddenly dead by a brain hemorrhage, for this reason, Hachi could not eat "anything"  for a long... time in his barn... It might have been Hachi's grave grief and heartbreak by losing his master...

By the way, after the professor died, the wife of the professor determined to send Hachi to their relative home.
She might have wanted to forget her husband's aftertaste like so... For Hachi was the one that the professor loved... Whenever she looked at Hachi in her home, she might have been anguished through Hachi, recalling her dead husband...

Nevertheless, Hachi couldn't be adapted himself to live with other family/home... so that, Hachi left from there, and then came back to the city that the professor lived, by doing so, Hachi became a " stray dog " with a hunger, sickness, and coldness... No one cared Hachi... Even people "teased" Hachi this way and that way, for Hachi became an abandoned dog on the streetã…¡ there no one cared Hachi in stark contrast with the professor...

Along the way, Hachi couldn't stop waiting his former master at the train station like the days Hachi awaited his master as always, day by day, until Hachi died... Whether or not it rained...whether or not it snowed... whether or not the storm blew, whether or not it was hot... Regardless, Hachi was there all the time, awaiting his former master...
But yet, the professor never got off the train... never more...

We people will know " the anguish of waiting " of how much it weighs us down by that pain... Today and tomorrow... and the day after tomorrow.... it never comes... never comes back...
Hachi might have felt the pain the same as people, only awaiting his former master out there...

After that, Hachi was also dead with a sickness... The cause of Hachi's death was the infection of parasites... When veterinarians/doctors for animals inquired into the cause of Hachi's death, some of sharp chicken bones were discovered in Hachi's digestive organs... On this account, Hachi's belly was crowed with water...(perhaps, including inflammation)ã…¡ I don't know the exact medical terminology and its knowledge...

Because, Hachi was a stray dog, so, was not able to be protected at all...  Until the day Hachi died,  Hachi awaited his former master at the train station all along...for "nine years"...

This mournful and touching story of Hachi was reported by the Asahi newspaper of Japan... and then, spread widely...
The Japanese wanted to commemorate Hachi's loyal and changeless heart for his owner, thus made the statue of Hachi at the train station in Japan like below;

Some say that animals have no their heart and mind... But I would like to be against about that, I think that animals also have their own mind and heart... that said, only the "spirit/soul" might not have in them, namely, the afterlife...

I experienced that kind of communion with the dog before, the dog was like "Hachi" in some ways...
One day, I found a wandering dog around my house. It was also Shih-tzu... Nuni closely resembles the dogã…¡the color, the size, and appearance...

The dog seemed to be lost his owner... At that time, I brought about the dog to my home on behalf of reporting to the dog shelter that has managed by my city(government). That time, I pretty liked dogs as if the professor... I took care of the stray dog with all my heart...

However, I was not able to be with the dog for a long periodã…¡it might have been for a weekã…¡ because, when I went out with the dog, miraculously, I met the dog's former owner on the street. For He lived around my house... He said that he has tried to find his lost dog ...

I couldn't help but hand over the dog to the original owner... That being said, I felt an unknowable sadness in my heart that I had to say goodbye...

It has been a few days like so...

One day, the dog  sat down in front of my house door. I was very astonished at the sight! I spent some time with the dog, thereafter I took the dog to the owner's home. The dog seemed that he could not " forget " my presence and the days that the dog and I spent several days together in my home...

And it has been a few days again...

One day, the dog sat down in front of my house door again! But, sadly... the dog was bleeding from one eye! What happened!... I immediately thought that the dog might have struggled to flee from the original owner who might have tied up the dog not to flee from, never more! Along the way, the dog's eye might have been pricked by something peak like a needle...

I was puzzled/bewildered,  seeing the wounded dog... I felt a heartache through... I spent some time with the dog, afterward, I took the dog to the owner's home again...

Well, the owner's old mother was there, she asked me to buy the dog, the price was approximately $450!
Back then, I couldn't afford to buy the dog, moreover it was too expensive to me... I could not purchase the dog, though I liked the dog...

After that,  I moved out to other place, hence I couldn't hear the news of the dog nor could I see the dog any longer... But, I cannot still "forget" the dog like the dog could not forget my presence, this writing will be the proof that I cannot still forget the dog... And I'm writing about the story from which it happened twenty years ago(probably) in my life... That is why I believe that dogs have their own mind and heart through all these stories...

Love...

The story of " Les misérables" pops into my head,  Jean Valjean  purloined/stole some possessions of the priest, but the priest demonstrated his mercy to Jean Valjean.  Since that time,  the unforgettable mercy was deeply etched in Jean Valjean's rough and hardened heart...

After experiencing the mercy for the first time in his life, Jean Valjean was transformed thereby, even though it was just a "fiction"... Jean Valjean's frozen heart like a solid iceberg might have melted by the "mercy" that the priest demonstrated...
So, Vitor Marie Hugo (1802~1885, France) , who wrote this story "Les misérables" might have said like this; " The supreme happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved."....
For Jean Valjean might have never been "received" such a "mercy/love" as a poor thief who was just obsessed how to live, how to eat, and how to escape from the poverty... there might only have been a derision, persecution, inequity, betrayal, poverty, desperation, loneliness, hunger, sickness, wrath, resentment, grief , and an angst/anxiety... in his ill-fated life by which he had to live as the poor... In the end, Jean Valjean might have decided to be a thief in order to live like other people do live...

Who would admire "the poor" in our society?... But rather, people will despise or tease them like Hachi was abandoned from people...

Whenever Christmas comes back, I recall the famous story of "The Little Match Girl" (written by Hans Christian Andersen , 1805~1875 , Denmark) that most people know. No one helped the pitiful little girl, even if she shouted,
" Please, buy these matches! ...please, buy these matches, please...buy these matches... ! "
After all... the little girl died on the street like Hachi...

Image : Google

Jean Valjean might have harbored that feelings deep in his heart. And when he was put behind bars/imprisoned by stealing "only some of bread" in order to soothe his hunger the present, in other words, to "live" , that feelings might have been reached a high point...

It doesn't mean that such a theft(crime) must be justified, but rather, they, the poor and the weak, might have to "die" with a hunger just as it is... like the little match girl died with the mockery and exclusion,  if it is their predestined destiny... to die...like so...

Well, this heartless world never forgave Jean Valjean like the rigid/strict detective Javert... In contrast, still today those who are the strong and the rich craftily/foxily get out of  "the net of the law" through their "power" and "money"(bribe)...

Hachi might have received the unforgettable mercy/love from the former master like Jean Valjean received the mercy from...  By that love and mercy, Hachi might have never been forgotten the memories of mercy and love in his heart... like also Jean Valjean was not able to forget that love and mercy in his heart...

Such a love and mercy might produce another love and another sacrifice as if Hachi's long wait and Jean Valjean's dramatic transformation...

On the one hand, humans are very selfishã…¡that is an inherent/inborn sinful nature of human, on the other hand,  humans "might" have the thing that can be transformed by love and mercy... that kind of things...

We people might know this parableã…¡ "the game of the sun and the wind." They made a bet through a man about who would win. The bet was this; What if the man took off his outer garment, then the game was over.

First, the wind majestically/grandly made sure that he would win, and then blew away the man's outer garment, but yet, the man grasped his garment more tightly with his hand,  lest it should be blown away.

Second, now it the sun's turn. The sun made warm the man, and then he felt the heat from the sunshine, after all he undressed his outer garment...
The sun won.
Likewise, love might be the same as the sun's way...

Despite, what if one never transforms through the way of the sun, love, then the vehement/violent storm might need to hit against those who are still stubborn with their unchanged character like the day thunder strikes and lightning flashes... After striking the violent storm, there, the broken bottom part, might sprout a new bud... a new life...

But, what is more hopeless is,  the storm never strikes to those who are not given the chance to encounter the storm.  Even The storm might renounce them to transform...
Instead, there might be only the indifference.
